Completing Homework Assignments Faster
1) The problem we are going to solve is:

How can we get them to do their homework assignments faster?

2.) The education that can create long-lasting change:
  • If you do the dull tasks faster, you'll have more time for fun things. Most of us have to work and do tasks that aren't fun. Let's take laundry, if nobody does it, we would all be smelling pretty bad. We try to make time for the fun things. If you were able to figure out how to do the tasks faster, logically you would have more time to do the things that you enjoy.
  • Our feelings of happiness can be changed by what we choose to focus on. I can explain how rumination causes people to focus on what they don't have, which causes unhappiness as an example. If you focus your mind on the challenge of doing it faster and accurately, the benefits of the freedom that comes with that extra time, and less on how much you don't want to work, your mind will become preoccupied with good thoughts.
  • Doing well in school gives you more freedom to choose how you spend your life. School is part of a bigger picture. Let's think about what you want to do when you become an adult. School is one of those things that people judge you on because they don't know you otherwise. That means the better you do there, the more choices you will have in term of career choice. Maybe you want something that's fun. Maybe you want to change the world. Maybe you want to make a lot of money. Whatever that desire is, doing well in school will help to open more doors for you.
  • Why stress/complain over the things you can't change? It's more important to know what can be done, and then work those limitations as much to your advantage as possible.
  • Show them videos or images of people they may admire that worked hard to get where they are.
  • Show them the KidCash collection of videos of people who make writing look fun. Watching people who write beautifully with care can make them care.
  • Set a good example. Show them things that I can do quickly and explaining how it helps me free up time.
3.) We will hold them accountable by:
  • When they decide to do homework slowly, they will have to stay at the table, no playing, no walking around. They will have to sit in their chair until they're done.
  • When they complain, I will remind them that it's normal, but they should focus on the fact that everybody has to do it, and it's eventually going to help them.
  • When they work really slowly, I will mention things they could be doing if they were done.
4.) We will incentivize good decisions by:
  • Whenever they do their assignments fast, I will verbally praise them on the spot. I will audibly tell my phone to remind me to give them a special bonus at allowance time. They can earn up to one bonus dollar per weekday for up to two months.
  • Whenever they do their assignments quickly AND happily with no complaints, I will announce another special bonus for the attitude adjustment.
  • Whenever homeworks were done quickly and the teacher marks them as flawless, I will make a big deal about it and occasionally reward them with bonus dollars.
  • When they are buying something, I will remind them how many bonus dollars they got for doing their assignments well that week.
  • We can go to the stationary store and let them pick out special pens or writing tools to make them want to write.
  • I can create a special ice cream trip for a day when they did their assignments especially quick.
  • Download and print a goal sheet, find something they really want and tell them that for every assignment done quickly, they will get a check towards buying that item.
