One month, one week at a time.
Most families quit new systems because they start with all of it. Add one piece a week instead, and by the end of the month it is just how your house works.
Pick the argument you are tired of.
Choose one currency, usually screens, and set the price. Tell the kids the rule once. Nothing else changes this week.
- Set what a dollar buys, in minutes or in treats.
- Name three things they can do to earn.
- Pick the day and time for Payday, and keep it.
Say why, every time you pay.
This is the week the teaching starts. When you hand over money, name the behavior out loud. One sentence is plenty.
- Log it in the moment, not at bedtime.
- Add your first bonus for something genuinely hard.
- Let them spend what they earned, even if you would not have.
Add a second currency, and the tickets.
Once the first one runs itself, add the next argument on your list. Start writing tickets so corrections move to Payday instead of escalating on the spot.
- Keep the prices consistent between currencies.
- Write the ticket calmly and hand it over. No speech.
- Let a kid pick a savings goal they actually want.
Make Payday the part they look forward to.
Same seat, same time, snacks if that helps. Celebrate first, settle the tickets second, and name one thing to work on next week.
- Read the wins out loud before anything else.
- Hand the app to the kids for their own balances.
- Adjust prices if something is too easy or out of reach.
When it slips, and it will.
You forgot to log all week
Pay a flat amount for the week, say so, and start clean on Monday. Do not reconstruct it from memory.
They stopped caring
Usually the prize is too far away. Shrink the goal, or post a bounty on something they want this week.
One kid games it
That is a good sign, they understand the rules. Reprice the loophole at Payday and tell them why.
